I awoke one morning to an email from my boyfriend, Mike, instructing me to pack a suitcase that day. I read the instructions labeled, "Mandy's Big Adventure", and followed them closely while packing my bag and clearing my schedule for the next week. Mike and I left on an airplane at 5am that next morning and I had no clue as to where we were going. My only hints were on that packing list, included hiking boots and a bathing suit. But this did not help me to figure out the secret destination.
Mike did not tell me the location until we had at a layover in Washington, DC. We sat down for lunch and he revealed that we were going to ICELAND! I thought, why in the world are we going to Iceland? I remember joking with him a year before saying, "The only way you're getting me to marry you, is if you propose on the moon or under the northern lights!" I laughed and hinted at this, but he assured me this was just a vacation and not to get my hopes up.
Once we arrived on 12/12/12, we rented a little red Jeep and went in search of our private villa on the side of a mountain, in front of The Whale Fjord. We could see the lights from Reykjavik and a meteor shower going on overhead, from our private geo-thermal hot tub outside. Then, all of a sudden Mike yelled out, "Mandy, look!" I had always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis, and taking a chance that they would even show up, Mike had arranged to bring ME to THEM!
We ran inside, threw on big warm boots, grabbed a camera and stood on the front porch to take photos. I leaned up against a porch post to steady my camera and from behind me I heard Mike calling my name. Distracted by the lights, it took him three times to get my attention, but I finally turned around to see him down on one knee. I jumped back with a start, when I saw him holding out a ring in a black box while he began to speak. He uttered some sweet words that I cannot remember (from shock) and then he asked me to marry him.
I began to cry and yelled out, "YES!" And as I hugged him, we gazed into the sky to watch the lava lamp of colors decorate the earth. All I could think at that moment and every day since, is that I am the luckiest girl in the universe.
