We both have had previous marriages that ended in the same way. It took many years for me to be able to trust in another relationship, but when I met Shayne, I had a feeling he deserved my trust. Over the course of several months, he not only earned my trust, he showed me how wonderful honest, sincere love really is. We had established from the start that we would be content to have a common law marriage and after a year, he supplied the information to the military and we became a common law couple. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 for a short tour and it was the worst time of my life, but we got through it. He was again deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 for another tour. After the torture of waiting for him to actually leave because of volcanic eruptions delaying flights for THREE DAYS, they finally left, and the real challenge began. Every day brought the same thing: worry, fear, anticipation, and the knowledge that one day he would be home. When he came home on leave for three weeks he had already planned for us to take a trip to Nova Scotia to go whale watching, something I had always wanted to do!! He had grown up in Newfoundland so whales were common place for him. I met him at the Ottawa airport and brought him home to Petawawa in a flurry of excitement that he was really home! If only for a few weeks before he had to go back and we were going on a great trip! When we got home, he began to unpack all sorts of gifts for our family. He had chosen very sweet trinkets for my daughters, our sisters, and our moms. We were sitting on the living room floor in the midst of bags when he said "I was going to give this to you in Nova Scotia but I thought you may like to wear it now" and he pulled out a little blue box. When he opened it, there was this delicate white gold and diamond ring and all I could say was "It's beautiful!". Being a strong man who rarely shows emotion, he could only say "Well, what do you say?". I didn't see the tears in his eyes and I replied "Thank you sweetie!!!". He choked a bit more and said "That's not what people usually say honey". I then saw the tears running and I had to ask him if he was actually proposing! It was so typical of our life together, quiet, private and very loving. He had not told anyone before proposing, not his family, not his buddies, no-one. I also got through the rest of the tour knowing that he would keep his promise to come home safe.
