Scottish proposals don't only happen in Braveheart :)
My boyfriend Joe and I had been planning a trip to England for a couple of years. His cousin was getting married and it was a great reason for him and I to go on our very first intercontinental vacation together. His whole family went along for the trip, and we all spent a week together in the south of England. We had an amazing time, but we were very excited to take a trip, just the 2 of us, to Scotland. He had been there before and loved it. He has Scottish heritage and it is very important to him.
Before I get to the juicy details of the engagement, I have to note that I had requested that he not give me an engagement ring. I have absolutely nothing against the tradition, and all of my friends rings are absolutely gorgeous, however, I have never felt an emotional connection to any piece of jewellery, and I didn't want to have to start trying with one that cost a large sum.
Joe was posed with the difficult task of find a way to propose that didn't involve that very traditional aspect. This is where his Scottish heritage came in handy. He looked up traditional Scottish engagements and the "luckenbooth broach" popped up. This was a broach that was given between lovers as a sign of love and betrothal. He decided this was what he wanted to do, and this was before we ever decided to go to Scotland! I can only imagine what he was thinking when I told him I wanted to go there over any other place in Europe.
On our first morning in Edinburgh we decided to go for a hike up 'Arthur's Seat'. This is a popular hiking destination in the centre of town that can take the strong lunged to the summit of an extinct volcano. As we climbed the route that I had researched, he decided to go off the beaten path, annoying me slightly (little did I know we took it because it was the path less travelled). We stopped many times along the way, me with my camera, taking as many selfies as I could as we got higher and higher. Once was reached the first summit of the hike we stopped for snacks. I was mesmerized by the scenery and looking in the other direction when Joe asked me, "Would you like some water, a cookie, do you want to spend the rest of your life with me?" as he pulled out a piece of his family tartan with the Luckenbooth broach attached.
Just at that moment the sun broke through the clouds of a drizzily morning, which can be a rare occasion in that part of the world. It seemed like a blessing to our relationship, and we couldn't be happier.
Joe and I proceeded to by a souvenir ring from a shop in Edinburgh together. The ring was the last perfect piece of the puzzle, as it was identical to the broach, and contained a piece of volcanic stone in the middle, most likely from the very volcano that we were engaged upon ;) For the first time in my life, I have an emotional attachment to the ring that has found a permanent place on my left ring finger.
