PERFORMING ARTS MEDICINE

Performing Arts Medicine

Our unique Performing Arts Medicine subspecialty caters to an array of health-care needs specific to members of the performing arts community including actors, dancers, vocalists and musicians. Evaluating the performer’s technique, physical conditioning, diet, sleep hygiene, and emotional state are all crucial in a proper diagnosis and the development of a tailored treatment plan. This treatment plan can include education on proper posture and body mechanics, enabling patients to take an active role in their recovery, and making any necessary adjustments to prevent re-injury.

A formal definition of performing arts medicine is a subspecialty of occupational medicine that addresses the medical complaints of those who play musical instruments, sing, dance, and act. These medical complaints may be somatic in origin as with overuse musculoskeletal injuries or psychological as with performance anxiety.

Other Members of your treatment team could include:
  • Orthopaedic Surgeon
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Speech Therapist
  • Psychologist or counseling services
  • Dietician/Nutritionist
  • Audiologist
  • Vocal Evaluation with an ENT Specialist
The concept of performing arts medicine may be viewed in one of two ways. First, from the vantage point of society, the performing arts historically have had the ability to provide comfort, arouse the human emotion, inspire, and at the very least entertain. They themselves can serve as “medicine for the soul”. However, the artist that places their mind and body on the line for the betterment of society also need “medicine” in a more literal sense.
