Allendale, NJ

The small Bergen County borough of Allendale is a tiny place with a lot going on. It was only known to Native Americans until the early 1700s, when settlers built farms and homesteads in the area. Later, the area was part of the Ramapo Tract, a 42,500-acre parcel of land controlled by the East New Jersey Board of Proprietors. The proprietors were mostly an old-world real estate speculation group with many members who never set foot on the American lands they controlled. In 1894, residents of Allendale voted for the establishment of a new borough, which was then formed from parts of Orvil, Ho-ho-kus, and Franklin Townships. A phenomenon that is now known as "Boroughitis" had swept through Bergen County, with twenty-six boroughs being formed there in that year alone.

One of Allendale's attractions is the "Celery Farm," a nature preserve with hundreds of animals living there and many available to interact with. A few examples are turtles, rabbits, deer, and more.
