Bed Bug Exterminator

“Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” is a nightly mantra that many children hear from their parents while being tucked into bed. Little do they realize that besides a cute rhyme, this is also a legitimate warning, as anyone who bed bugs have attacked can attest. These tiny crawlers’ bites are much worse than the average bug bites. When these little incarnates of evil have their meal, they also inject an anticoagulant to keep the blood flowing and a painkiller so their victim doesn’t know what’s happening. Welts can pop up, sometimes hours later, and in some people, not at all. The welts are typically in lines or bunches and cause red, itchy spots. Their bites can have psychological symptoms as well, making people feel like they have bugs crawling on them even days after being bitten. In some cases, they have even caused PTSD-like symptoms.

While they don’t have wings, bed bugs can quickly move from place to place in several ways. Whether they crawl from room to room or manage to make their way into someone’s briefcase, suitcase, backpack, or the like, they are experts at spreading to as many places as possible. They can slip through cracks and crevices, especially the seams of mattresses, which is where they get their name. Because they avoid light and are so skilled at hiding, sometimes it is hard to see them at first. Nymphs are immature bed bugs, and they shed their skin five times before reaching adulthood. Aside from the musky smell, these skins can also cause allergic reactions. Under the right circumstances, this can happen in as little as a month, and a female can give birth three or more times in a single year.

There have been over 90 types recorded, but only three are known to feed on humans. These are Cimex Lectularius, Cimex Hemipterus, the common and tropical bed bug. L. Boueti is found in South America and West Africa, and while they usually feed on the blood of bats, they have been known to feed on humans on rare occasions. New Jersey residents typically get infestations of the common bed bug because of the other two species’ affinity for tropical weather. Populations in New Jersey have, unfortunately, been on an exponential rise over the last five years. If an infestation remains unchecked, it can easily spread to nearby or attached homes and apartments before anyone even realizes it’s happening.
