Caldwell, NJ

Incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1892 from portions of Caldwell Township (which is now Fairfield Township), Caldwell’s name was eventually officially changed to “The Township of the Borough of Caldwell.” In 1981, Caldwell joined over a dozen municipalities in Essex county that reclassified themselves to receive more federal aid money. The borough was named for William C. Allen, who was a surveyor for the Erie Railroad.

Known as one of the best places to live in New Jersey, Caldwell is full of young professionals, many of whom commute a short sixteen miles to New York City for work. The borough itself is mostly residential, although several manufacturing plants are located here. One claim to fame that the city boasts is that in 1837, it was the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland, the only president ever born in New Jersey. His place of birth, a Presbyterian parsonage, has been preserved as a museum and State Historic Site.

Caldwell College, a highly-rated local Catholic private university opened here in 1939 by the Sisters of St. Dominic, offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate courses on a gorgeous, well-maintained campus. A large number of professionals has gained the borough a reputation for being well-educated, and the designation makes sense because approximately 20% of the population have a master’s degree or better.

All work and no play make for a dull life, and Caldwell residents have plenty of entertainment opportunities close to home. The Liberty Science Center museum is a fan favorite for both residents and visitors. This interactive experience-filled education center has showings of many different exhibits, from dinosaurs to space and everything in between. Over one hundred different animals are cared for and live in the facility, various art sections, and an incredible planetarium that rotates their showings. Getting some time outdoors is a breeze here as well. Grover Cleveland Park has excellent amenities such as lighted tennis courts, Bocce Ball and Shuffleboard Courts, Baseball fields, a pond for ice skating and fishing, and separate playgrounds for toddlers and older children.
