Cliffton, NJ

With a motto like “The City That Cares,” it’s no surprise that Niche.com ranked Clifton, New Jersey, as one of the best places to live in Passaic County. It is also the 11th most heavily populated municipality in the state, with an estimated 88,000 people. The area celebrated its centennial in 2017. However, documented settlements existed on the land that the town now occupies as far back as 1679, when a Native American leader, Captahem, gifted 11,000 acres along the Passaic River to Hans Frederick. The city took the name Clifton in reference to the cliffs of Garrett Mountain, which borders the western part of the city.

From its early days, Clifton was an agricultural hub, and in 1903 the U.S. Animal Quarantine Station opened. It was the East Coasts’ primary quarantine location for poultry to livestock, and zoo animals that were brought into the country, until the late 1970s, when the company moved the facility to Stewart International Airport. Today, the city has switched to suburban, residential communities, although it still proudly boasts two small farms that sell organic, in-season vegetables. Ploch’s Farm is a family-run, 15-acre farm operating since 1867. It is Clifton’s last working farm and produces the standard vegetables along with dandelions, Swiss chard, and more. In Autumn, you can find extra-large pumpkins, squash, and corn maze. The City and the Green Farm Eco-Center, is a non-profit promoting urban farming and education since 2004.

Although it is a city of New Jersey, Clifton is considered a suburb of New York City as it is only a short ten miles from The Big Apple. It is known for its diversity and having no shortage of stores and entertainment options for residents and visitors to enjoy. One noteworthy restaurant here is called Rutt’s Hut, which specializes in hot dogs. This All-American mecca, established in 1928, was once described in The New York Times as being “on the shortlist of the state’s esteemed hot dog palaces.”
