If there is one thing most homeowners have in common, it is they worry about pests, and 80% of them share that concern. Termites are one of the most-feared pests at 25%, and for a good reason, 13% of homeowners suffered termite damage in the last year. In fact, more homes are damaged by this insect than from fires and other natural disasters.
Due to climate change, winters have been milder and summers hotter and wetter creating the perfect recipe for increased infestations. Long gone are the days of the stereotypical dilapidated house falling apart from the pests. Homes that are still under construction and just-built homes are not immune to termites.
Subterranean Termites make their nests in the soil and build mud tubes to travel through to get to their food sources. This information is crucial to remaining pest-free in New Jersey as the state is listed as moderate to heavy in the U.S. Forest Service’s Termite Infestation Probability Zone Map. Across the country, the numbers are staggering as Americans spend over 7 billion dollars annually to fix damages and control them. If you are having a new home built in Bergen, Passaic, or Essex county, the time to start prevention is before the first piece of wood is hammered in. For the best in pre and post-construction termite control, contact New Day Pest Control.
To get maximum protection from the pest, treatment should begin before the concrete slab is even poured. Once the ground has been excavated, chemicals are laid down on the exposed earth before the vapor barrier is laid down. This creates a primary barrier between the ground and the slab that prevents the bugs from getting in. If the treatment is done after the slab has been poured, then the termiticide is applied under and next to the foundation to create a vertical barrier. We dig a trench at least 6 inches deep around the foundation, structural architecture, and chimney bases. The top surface of the slab is sprayed, and we can also drill holes into the slab and fill them with the treatment. The same process can be done to other parts of the foundation to fill voids and cracks. Once the framing is in and before the drywall is installed, the wood should also be treated.
We pay special attention to those parts of the slab where wooden structures like doors and window frames will be installed. We can also use baits as an added protection. Most baits are insect growth regulators which affect how the termites grow and interrupt their molting and reproductive cycles. The bait boxes are also used to determine the amount of termite activity. The ultimate goal is that no soil comes in contact with the building’s woodwork, and where there is a possibility, the area is protected.
