OVERVIEW

The Rokkvi Arctic Parka is the pinnacle luxury parka developed in collaboration with GORE-TEX® product technology. This GORE-TEX® product offers the natural properties and aesthetic of wool, but with all the performance of GORE-TEX® technology.  Re-engineering the Rokkvi specifically for this new textile produced the Rokkvi Arctic Parka.

The new wool blend face fabric is constructed using a GORE-TEX® membrane, and finished with a DWR coating. The waterproof outer is constructed with fully waterproof seam-finishing throughout, as well as a fixed lining insulated with 90/10 EU Standard Certified Goose Down. The internal pockets are designed for storage and quick access of everyday personal items.

OUTLINE

As part of a collaboration with Norse Projects, we studied the origin, evolution, and material construction of their cutting-edge Rokkvi Arctic Wool Gore-Tex Parka. The perspective gained from our “garment study” led us to focus on three key factors that have driven technical excellence and commercial success of the Rokkvi: Anthropology, Technology, and Consumerism.

For over 100 years, anthropological study has helped designers understand the development of the parka as a form, across place and time. Understanding of the parka’s uses by various cultures informed Norse Projects inclusion of functional and aesthetic design elements that might have otherwise been “lost” to history, such as the Rokkvi Arctic Wool Gore-Tex's box cut design, which mimics the Inuits original design.

Changes in technology played an important role in the improved function of the parka over time. From the Inuits’ use of animal skins, to the military’s addition of textiles and new elements pockets and layers, then to Norse Projects development of an original insulation and compact liner, technological improvements have mutated both the parka's function and its design.

Sometimes even the most extreme climates cannot match the power of consumerism. There are few places in the world where one might need a GORE-TEX face fabric and DWR coating. but the desire to be more technically excellent than competitors can lead to innovations that the arctic tundra could not.

ANTHROPOLOGICAL

Understanding the sociocultural history of a garment’s form can energize ideation and inform design decisions.

TECHNOLOGICAL

While a garment’s key function(s) may remain the same over place and time, changes in technology can drive innovation and improved function.

COMMERICAL

Consumers who want the best can demand technical specs that even the harshest environments do not .

KEY LEARNINGS

OTTO.ARC.029.3

Our key learnings distill each study into 3 lessons that can be applied to any design process.
