University Essentials For Your New Residence

Coronavirus has completely changed what we all perceived freshers week as, but how will it be different in 2021 with the Government's vaccination programme?

Last year, Freshers week was certainly different. Instead of the normal bustling campus and rammed student nights, covid confined students to their flats while everything from freshers fairs to lectures went online. As the days of the academic year marched on, students lived in constant fear that they’d get the dreaded instructions to self-isolate for 14 days.

This year, due to the government's vaccination programme roll-out, there are brighter times on the horizon. With pubs and bars opening up throughout April and May, and nightclubs opening up on 21st June, it looks like it could be a very sunny summer indeed. If the government roadmap goes to plan - which we’ve been ensured it will do - Freshers 2021 will feel like a blast from the past and we’ll finally be able to return to the norms of student life (fire alarms at 2am, the first flat traffic cone, the beer can tower and let’s not forget your mature student flatmate telling you to “shut the hell up” at 3.30am on a Wednesday).

With freshers last year effectively being cancelled, universities are preparing themselves for the biggest freshers week they’ve ever had. We all know how absolutely bonkers freshers week can be. If you’re a fresher this year, remember the second years who missed out last year will be wanting to have the same experience. Freshers fairs, socials and club nights, hell, even lecture halls are all set to be full to the brim.

The best advice we could give you this year, whether you’re a fresher or a returning student is to ensure you plan out your time and book anything that needs to be booked well in advance. Any events that needed to be booked we recommend doing so ASAP. We’ve compiled a list of the go-to events to make your life easier too

So don’t hang about, join those university groups and freshers chats and get to know your future flatmates and coursemates. Discuss societies and clubs so you know what stalls you’re definitely visiting during your freshers fair. And grab those freshers tickets before they sell out, because with double the numbers, they certainly will this year.
