We are living in extraordinary times, and small & medium businesses in Canada are bearing the brunt. We, at CanadianSME, wish to make sure that the small businesses are well-equipped with the right insights, knowledge, and tools and are well-prepared for the new normal.


Two years back, the CanadianSME Business Expo 2020 reached new heights in aiding the benefits of the small business owners in Canada. We had a very successful event with over 1500 business professionals including, small business owners, business leaders, experts, and entrepreneurs. With over 45 exhibitors with 42 speakers from across Canada, we hosted 7 different workshops and 7 edifying panel discussions. Additionally, we had amazing keynotes from our sponsors, Lenovo and Cisco, as well as a greeting from the Hon. Small Business Minister Pabmeet Sarkaria.


In 2021, our aim was to provide small and medium-scale enterprises with the right tools and knowledge and connect them with entrepreneurs from all walks of life. Our support for the small and medium businesses is unmatched all throughout and when it comes to honing young and upcoming entrepreneurs with perfect networking so that they can create new business opportunities, CanadianSME never steps back. Not only is this the occasion for creating a business entourage, but it also allows SME owners to promote their products. The CanadianSME Business Expo has only one goal that we work towards religiously: to give existing SMEs a higher market presence in today’s competitive economy.


In this year’s expo, we will be discussing entrepreneurial resilience in challenging times, small business leadership, Cloud and Technology that can transform your small business, live Q&A, cash flow tips from top financial experts, mental health, and much more. This year’s event is the continuation of our resolution to support the small and medium-sized business community of Canada, with proud sponsors like RBC, UPS, and Ricoh Canada. When business owners and leaders from different industries come together to support one another, exceptional things can happen. It’s like magic, only it’s all really happening. With over 1,500 attendees who were business owners from a wide-range of industries, 45 exhibitors, 42 speakers, 7 panel discussions and 7 workshops, to say that the event was a huge success is an understatement.

1.18 million small businesses

in Canada

As of December 2018, there were 1.2 million employer businesses in Canada (Table 1). Of these, 1.18 million (97.9 percent) were small businesses, 22,266 (1.9 percent) were medium-sized businesses and 3,010 (0.2 percent) were large businesses.


More than half of Canada's small employer businesses are concentrated in Ontario and Quebec (429,852 and 243,029, respectively). Western Canada has a large number of small businesses, led by British Columbia, which had 184,075 small businesses as of December 2018. In the Atlantic region, Nova Scotia has the most small businesses at 29,345.

22,266 (1.9 percent) were medium-sized businesses

The province with the most businesses per thousand individuals aged 18 and over is Prince Edward Island (50.6), followed by Alberta (49.2). In contrast, Quebec has the smallest number of businesses per thousand individuals aged 18 and over (36.4), followed by Nova Scotia (37.7), Manitoba (37.9) and Ontario (38.0).

As of December 2017, there were 1.18 million employer businesses in Canada (Table 1). Of these, 1.15 million (97.9 percent) were small businesses, 21,926 (1.9 percent) were medium-sized businesses and 2,939 (0.2 percent) were large businesses.

More than half of Canada's small employer businesses are concentrated in Ontario and Quebec (417,742 and 236,705 respectively). Western Canada has a large number of small businesses led by British Columbia, which had 179,517 small businesses as of December 2017. In the Atlantic region, Nova Scotia has the greatest number of small businesses at 28,874.
