It has several names, some of them are Djotish, Džotiš, Jotish and Jyotish, but they all speak about the same things.
Jyotish is not just astrology. The one, who interprete Jyotish, will not call himself an astrologer. The basic meaning of the word Jyotish is "light", which means that the one who gives the explanation of the baseline chart illuminates the path, gives advises and directs a person who asks about his/hers life path and the obstacles that have arisen there. Simply - microcosmos is the same as macrocosmos.
Vedic astrology Jyotish has been practiced for many thousands years. The earliest records are found in the Vedas - the ancient spiritual words of the Hindus and the oldest books that existed between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago. Indian name is Jyotish, which means "science of light", which is the science of observing celestial bodies that reflect their energy and light on the Earth, thus influencing the course of human events.
On the other hand, Western astrology was planned by the Greeks and Babylonians about 2,000-3,000 years ago. They believed that the Sun is the centre of our solar system and relationship between the Earth and the Sun is the most important thing. Every year, on the day of equinox, a new cycle begins in the zodiacal sign of Aries. Because of the leap year, which came every four years, the equilibrium is delayed, and they didn't take into account of calculations the inclination of the earth's axis (precession), because the earth's axis does not always appear in the same direction. Thus, western astrology is a little less accurate and differs from the Vedic, which shows the actual state of the sky.
In now-days the difference between Western and Vedic astrology is about 23,5º.
