Darwin International Airport Landslide Infrastructure Programme

Project overview

For Darwin International Airport, we successfully executed a comprehensive program of works, aiming to enhance the resilience of the airport's landside infrastructure and improve the overall passenger experience.

Our Advantage

One of the key advantages of our program was the active involvement of the local community and the support provided to the local economy through contracting local businesses.

Engaging local contractors for scoping, tendering, and completing minor works packages resulted in several benefits, including:

  • Stronger relationships and collaboration within the community.
  • Knowledge of local regulations and requirements.
  • Support for local employment opportunities.

Project Challenge

Prior to the program, the airport faced specific infrastructure challenges that impacted operations and overall efficiency.

These challenges included:

  • Outdated electrical systems that risked disruptions and safety concerns.
  • Deteriorating landside roads that affected traffic flow and accessibility.
  • Damaged kerbs, channels, and footpaths compromising pedestrian safety.
  • Water disruptions due to outdated infrastructure.
  • Erosion runoff threatening environmentally sensitive areas.

Our Solution

  • Scoping, tendering, and letting minor works packages to local contractors, ensuring the involvement of the local community and supporting the local economy.
  • Implementing electrical upgrades in the terminal building, which provided electrical redundancy and improved the reliability of the airport's power supply.
  • Conducting a reseal of the landside roads, enhancing their condition and ensuring smooth and safe vehicle movement within the airport premises.
  • Undertaking repairs of landside kerbs, channels, and footpaths, enhancing the overall functionality and safety of the airport for both pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Upgrading critical water infrastructure to mitigate water disruptions and ensure a reliable water supply throughout the airport.
  • Implementing concrete spillways and rock protection measures to mitigate erosion runoff into environmentally sensitive areas, demonstrating a commitment to environmental protection and compliance.

Project Outcome

The program's long-term benefits and rewards for Darwin International Airport include:

  • Improved reliability in operations leading to increased stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Enhanced passenger experience through enhanced infrastructure quality and safety.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental compliance and sustainability.

The program of works at Darwin International Airport has been a resounding success, delivering improved infrastructure, efficiency, and safety. As we look to the future, Darwin International Airport remains fully committed to continuous improvement and development, ensuring an exceptional experience for all stakeholders and contributing positively to the local community and environment.
