Sedation Dentistry

Keep Your Kids Comfortable

Many children are afraid of the dentist, and this can lead to dental problems that may be difficult or impossible to fix later on. If your child is afraid of the dentist, sedation dentistry may be the answer. Sedation dentistry uses medications to help children relax and feel comfortable during their dental appointment. In some cases, sedation dentistry can even be used to calm very young children who are not yet able to sit still for a dental exam. There are several types of sedatives that can be used, but nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is one of the most popular options. Dr. Josh Morales is specially trained in providing pediatric sedation dentistry, and uses only the safest and most effective sedation techniques.

  • Are there long-term effects of sedation dentistry on children?

There is no long-term research indicating any negative effects of sedation dentistry on children. However, any time a child is sedated, there is always a risk of complications. That's why it's important to only use qualified, experienced professionals like Dr. Morales to provide pediatric sedation dentistry services.

  • What does sedation dentistry feel like to my child?

This depends on the method of sedation. With laughing gas, your child will feel light-headed, giggly, and relaxed, but will be fully conscious and aware of their surroundings. They will also feel more comfortable during treatment.

Conscious sedation will usually make patients feel groggy or sleepy. Your child probably won’t remember much about the procedure. However, they will not be unconscious, and can still be woken and respond to commands.

IV Sedation is often the right choice for more extensive treatment needs or for our younger patients. It allows your child to "sleep" through all of the needed treatment. We always have the parents hold their child as they drift off to sleep and wake back up.

  • Is it common for pediatric dentists to use sedation?

Yes, it is common for pediatric dentists to use sedation. Children can be very apprehensive about going to the dentist, and many children need dental work done but are too afraid or anxious to sit through a traditional dental appointment. Sedation can help to ease a child's anxiety and make the dental visit less stressful. There are different types of sedation, and pediatric dentists will typically use the type of sedation that is best suited for each individual child. Some children may simply need a mild relaxant such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help them relax.
